In April, we lost one of our own, Mary Claire, quite unexpectedly. This page was created to preserve her memory as plenty of us spent many years inside and outside the classroom with her. If you so choose, please pay respects to her and her family. Mary Claire Satterly, 27, of Wilson and San Francisco passed away Monday morning surrounded by her family in a place she loved dearly, Chapel Hill. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Therese Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. Mary Claire Satterly was born on July 8, 1980 in Wilson. “Little MC” to her big sisters, Karen and Laura, and “Squirt” to her big brother, Stephen, had a glimmer in her eye and a contagious smile from birth. Mary Claire attended Hunt High School where she loved playing soccer and working at the North Star Art Gallery. In 2002, Mary Claire graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Mass Communication. At Chapel Hill, Mary Claire never missed a Carolina Basketball game and formed life-long friendships in the Chi-Omega Sorority. After graduation, Mary Claire and the “Carolina Girls” headed to New York City, where she worked for the non-profit Fresh Air Fund and then Deutsch Advertising. In 2006, she traded Manhattan for the Marina District in San Francisco where she worked for Goodby, Silverstein & Partners. Both agencies were named “Agency of the Year” during her employment and she received numerous individual awards for her work. Mary Claire lived and loved life to its fullest. She often ran the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and half-marathons in Central Park. She looked forward to “Griswold” family holidays and attended Sunday Mass in each of her new cities. Among her favorite things were fishing with Dad, planning the next “SS&MC” adventure with her brother Stephen, wine-tasting with her brother-in-law Greg, enjoying lazy days at Atlantic Beach and shopping trips with her mom and sisters, and chasing her niece and nephew around the park. Mary Claire loved nothing more than to be with her family and friends. For 27 years she was a gift and inspiration to us all, each and every day. Mary Claire is survived by her parents, Joan and Chip Satterly of Wilson; two sisters, Karen Satterly Bensch and husband, Greg of Stockton, Calif., and Laura Beth Satterly of New York, NY; a brother, Stephen Michael Satterly of Des Moines, Iowa; a niece, Virginia Howell Bensch and nephew, William Robert Bensch both of Stockton, Calif.; her grandmother, Pauline Satterly of Wilson; many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and her Goddaughter, Caroline Carson Koon of Richmond, Va., whose baptism brought Mary Claire home for the last time.
